Coming into Savannah was so exciting! The town of Savannah is very old, historical, houses are close together, more colorful houses than down town streets in Wyoming. I don't think I would ever chose to live in Savannah, too much city for me, but it is very cool to drive through and explore. Once past the city, it's bridges, waterways and boats in every direction! There are several marinas in this area.
The Wilmington Country Club and Wilmington Plantation are right next to us. There is a lot of history with the Wilmington Plantation.
The Wilmington Plantation was built in 1926, originally named the General Oglethorpe Hotel. The owner also had a top of the line golf course built near the hotel. It was built to be a prestigious place for the wealthy; however, with the stock crash in 1929, it was short lived. It sold and changed owners a few times, then remained vacant from 1980ish to the early 2000’s. In the early 2000’s it was reopened as condos for sale or rent. Condos go from 1-4 bedrooms and 1-2 & 1/2 bathrooms; sale prices from $400,000 to over a million dollars!
The golf course across the street was originally apart of the Wilmington Plantation but is now its own intenty. It remains very busy and very well kept, it has a very nice path around that we use when we ride our bikes to Publix or Ace, which is maybe a mile from us.
There are so many different kinds of trees, palms galor! A couple of days ago Matthew and I saw blooming magnolia trees. Matthew had never seen those before, he just kept smelling the flowers 🌸. Palm trees are my favorite tree. If you’re standing in our marina looking out to the entrance there’s a perfect little palm tree maybe 8’ tall right center of the view; it’s on the golf course. The views here do not disappoint! Of course, the sunsets on the water are usually calm and gorgeous. The birds, on the other hand, are obnoxious! There are some incredibly loud birds here. The grey and black pelicans are creepy-they are so big! There are also white egrets that are pretty neat to watch. They stand in the water, watching for food. There’s some other type of bird that dive bombs into water after fish. It’s pretty funny to watch birds just fly from the sky into the water. We have also watched a bald eagle fly very near our boat headed to its nest with food, geese fly by and different breeds of ducks.
Not all animals are appreciated. We’ve seen raccoons around our marina at night; only a few but all too many cockroaches, and the unseen sand fleas or something that bite are awful! But for the most part, we are enjoying our time here. Lots of new adventures, things to see and do and explore.
